| Flying Fig Theater is proud to present THE GUT GIRLS by Sarah Daniels; This production marks the play’s first major revival since its NYC premiere in 1993. The “gut girls” of Deptford, England, circa 1900, are rowdy, boisterous, have mouths like sailors and are as strong as the oxen they gut. By day they are up to their knees in freshly slaughtered animal entrails, but in the evenings they are their own women, financially independent to a degree rare for young working-class women in Victorian/Edwardian England. Enter Lady Helena, an aristocrat on a mission to teach the gut girls some manners and get them employed as domestics. The result is a total surrender of their independence, spirit, and way of life. |

The world premiere of SUS MANOS will incorporate theater, film, and music to elevate the historical saga of two women struggling for identity in Central America. On the eve of the first rebellion of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, Christian, an American filmmaker, arrives at Marco Marcado’s hacienda in the outskirts of Oaxaca, Mexico. Christian sets out to film a Mexican-American version of OTHELLO starring a beautiful young entertainer Lolita. Marco finds Lolita at a familiar brothel in the city, which enrages his wife Julia. As the film progresses, the jealous drama of OTHELLO and the legend of the hacienda intertwine bringing Lolita and Julia together in an ultimate fight for freedom, respect, and love in a country on the brink of revolution. SUS MANOS will be performed in English and Spanish. |
